The Centre for Low Carbon Futures

The Centre for Low Carbon Futures is a £50m initiative to establish a world leading multidisciplinary, cross-university translational research centre that will harness the region’s research strengths in sustainability sciences to induce a transition towards a lower carbon future for Yorkshire & the Humber.

A flagship initiative of the Yorkshire Universities - Yorkshire Forward Strategic Alliance Activity Framework, the Centre is being developed on behalf of the region by the three White Rose universities and the University of Hull. Yorkshire Forward is investing significant resource into the creation of the Centre in addition to providing funds to leverage further support from national and international research funding agencies.

The Centre is unique in the UK in its approach of utilising the international research expertise found in regional universities across the spectrum of technology and engineering, natural sciences and social sciences, with the aim of creating the knowledge required to address carbon efficiency in the full range of processes relevant to businesses and the wider community.

The Centre’s approach is to address the questions posed in developing a low carbon future from two complementary perspectives, climate change impact and adaptation and life-cycle carbon management. The integration of these two themes will enable the Centre to build technology and carbon foresight capabilities, critical in identifying implementation pathways for a low carbon economy.
