Aim

White Rose Studentship Networks promote collaboration across the Universities of Leeds, Sheffield and York.  For this competition there are two Studentship Networks available (to start around October 2012).

·         This competition is open to any research area (excluding research within the remit of ESRC or BBSRC).

·         We have the aspiration that funded networks will act as platforms for future funding bids.  We therefore advise applicants to consider how the Studentship Network will align with opportunities from funding bodies (for example the Research Councils’ priorities) and to include this information in the proposal.

Background

The White Rose studentships initiative was set up in 1997 to encourage collaboration between the Universities of Leeds, Sheffield and York.  Since 2005 the studentships have been awarded as networks to promote collaboration across the three institutions.  The Pro-Vice-Chancellors (covering research) at the three Universities decide the areas where proposals are invited.

Eligible Research Areas

We have two Studentship Networks to allocate in this competition and invite proposals from any research area, but excluding research within the remit of ESRC or BBSRC.  Proposals in the remit of ESRC or BBSRC are ineligible since there is a separate commitment to fund White Rose Studentship Networks in these remits.  Since this competition is open to different research areas and does not have “strategic themes” then applicants are strongly advised to demonstrate why their proposal is important to the White Rose universities.
