In October 2003, the White Rose University Consortium, together with Sheffield Hallam University, was appointed to run the prestigious National Science Learning Centre – a £51 million government/Wellcome Trust initiative to invigorate science teaching across the UK.
Based at the University of York, The National Centre will lead the development of an innovative professional development programme for science teachers that will inspire their teaching and equip them to communicate the dynamic nature of pioneering scientific research and development to their students.
Set to open in 2005, the Centre will house a state-of-the-art resource centre, multi-purpose laboratory, conference facilities for up to 300 people, and purpose built residential accommodation. Contemporary science courses will be delivered by research scientists from the consortium universities at the forefront of their disciplines, boosting teachers’ knowledge of cutting edge science and technology and their related societal and ethical issues.
In addition to the flagship National Centre, White Rose was also appointed to run one of six regional Science Learning Centres across the UK. The regional Centre will be based at Sheffield Hallam University.
