Social Science Event

Promoting Collaboration in the Social Sciences

26th November 2010 - York

General Observations

There was an appetite for more focussed events around the strategic themes of the ESRC strategic plan. White Rose will work with the academic leads for the DTC and if/when this is awarded we will look to structure activity in the new year to maximise opportunities for WR University research groups. Our view is that more focussed events will generate a greater level of participation and would strengthen the activity of the DTC.

Health and Wellbeing

Two themes emerged from this session. The first focussed on aging which could potentially encompass a range of topics including injustice, social mobility, resilience, residential space and ethical issues. Aiming to address a theme along the lines of 'Staying alive: ageing, wellbeing and social technologies'. A multidisciplinary approach to this theme would bring together a number of different tools and expertise which could examine a number of the issues surrounding aging. (Parallels to the Leeds IKC theme of ’50 years after 50’ were alluded to). The second theme addressed the concept of wellbeing, how it can be measured and how the results can be interpreted. In particular discussing the different methods used which included (1) questionnaire development - its wording, presentation, administration, (2) populations that is applied to and their interrelationships and (3) purpose - how the results are interpreted and used.

Security, Conflict and Justice

Two major themes emerged from this workshop, although colleagues acknowledged that more time would allow these to become more focussed and other ideas to emerge. The first, ‘Relationships between global transformations and local insecurities’ would look at how changes across the world have an impact at the local level. The second, ‘Tensions between expectation of security and demand for justice’ would consider issues that effect the trade off between security and justice.

Energy, Environment & Resilience

The group had a general wish to encourage interdisciplinary collaboration, to work closer with projects in the 'science' departments. It was recommended to get  around this a network of 'go to' social scientists could possibly be created, a few of the group wanted to take this further and asked if they  could approach White Rose with a proposal for stimulating activity.

Three possible areas for further work were identified: (i) ‘Public understanding of
environmental science and the low carbon agenda’, (ii) ‘Natural resources and bio-diversity development together with public participation and management’ and (iii) ‘Modelling around economic/ policy and social networks within the energy, environment and resilience theme’.
