All White Rose staff are mobile and work closely with colleagues at all levels within each university, and collectively as a team.

The White Rose head office is in Leeds and Project Development Managers are based at the White Rose universities of Leeds, Sheffield and York.

Individual projects have separate management structures and staff spread across all three universities, depending on institutional involvement with the projects.

  • Dr Craig Walker

    As Director  Craig provides  leadership to our initiatives to further research, training and knowledge exchange activity across the White Rose universities.

    Before joining White Rose in 2009, Craig worked at the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), managing research investments, as well as engaging with the academic community, industry and other funding agencies both in the UK and internationally.

    Craig’s background is in electronics, semiconductors and lasers. He is a graduate of the University of York and has a PhD from the University of Glasgow. Craig also worked as a researcher at Cardiff University.

  • Joanne Hutchings

    Jo is Dr Craig Walker’s PA and the Office Manager of the White Rose University Consortium head office in York and the office in Brussels.

    She has over fifteen years experience of working at a senior admin level including PA to a number of directors at Serco including the Transformation Director and the Director of Group IT

  • Claire Pickerden

    Claire Pickerden is a Project Development Manager based at the University of Sheffield. Claire is responsible for developing and facilitating White Rose projects, and supporting staff from all three institutions in new collaborations.

    Claire has wide ranging business development and project management experience across the public sector with particular expertise in addressing gender equality within STEM and business planning and fundraising for the creative sector. She currently sits on the University of Sheffield’s Women in Engineering Group and Women@TUOSNetwork and has interest in women in leadership issues.

    Previous employment was with the UK’s leading organisation for the provision of gender equality services into the STEM sector at the UKRC, running the European programme, and was an Advisor to the GenCo gender project led by the Technical University of Dortmund.

  • Karen Tsui

    Karen identifies and develops new collaborations across the White Rose Universities, as well as strengthening existing initiatives.  She builds strong relationships with University senior management, academic and professional staff. She also develops useful partnerships with external organisations.

    Previously she was the Worldwide Universities Network Coordinator and Administrator of the New Dynamics of Ageing Programme. Prior to that, she held roles at Imperial College London, the University of Southampton and the University of Hong Kong (HKU). She holds a BA in Translation (HKU) and a MA in English Language Studies and Methods (Warwick). She speaks Cantonese and Mandarin Chinese.

  • Dr Phil Holliday

    Phil manages the activities of our European office based in Brussels and represents the interests of the universities in a range of activities with a focus on public affairs and long-term research positioning.

    Previously Phil has been working at the Research Councils since 2008 in numerous roles, such as Business Interface Manager at the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC). More recently Phil has been on secondment to the RCUK China office in Beijing as Interim Deputy Director during the launch of the Newton Fund and to the UK Research Office in Brussels as European Advisor as well as the UK National Contact Point for the European Research Council. Phil has a PhD in biochemistry from the University of Durham.
